Rocky Mountain Innovation Initiative

“Just as energy is the basis of life itself, and ideas the source of innovation, so is innovation the vital spark of all human change, improvement and progress”

-Theodore Levitt

The Rocky Mountain Innovation Initiative, RMI2, is a regional non-profit formed to accelerate the success of high impact scientific and technology start-up companies in Northern Colorado. RMI2 promotes a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in the region and provides a connection point between entreprenuers, capital, academic and government institutions, professional service providers and workforce talent. The Initiative was formed by an alliance of Northen Colorado municipal governments, academic institutions and economic development organizations.

Serving a flourishing entrepreneurial culture

Northern Colorado is an innovation hotbed, with a unique blend of Natural Sciences, Information Technology, Clean Energy and Technology-assisted Agriculture and Veterinary Science. According to a study conducted by Development Research Partners in 2006, Larimer County has more than 440 companies, with over 11,000 employees, in the fields of Computers and Electronics, IT/Software, Agri-Tech, Bioscience and Clean Energy.

Colorado State University is a world leader in infectious disease research, atmospheric science and environmental science. Its faculty members are tackling such issues as the reemergence of tuberculosis, the brown cloud of air pollution in Asian cities, severe weather forecasting, nutrition and wellness, and bioterrorism.

The region has a highly educated workforce, with Fort Collins being named to Fast Companies magazine Fast Cities list in 2007. The magazine cited Fort Collins as generating patents at the rate of 11.45 per 10,000 people, or nearly four times the U.S. city average.
